My inspiration is primarily an ecstatic, visionary experience of nature, where the landscape and the figure represent a portal to a *hidden* world of fundamental energy, chaos, and control. A major theme in my paintings is the narrative of the figure engaged in a ritualized or ceremonial interaction with the environment. The landscape and it's denizens serve as the stage setting and props for an age-old drama: the quest for extra-ordinary perception and illumination. In this classic engagement, the boundaries and fabric of figure and ground are defined, destroyed, and rebuilt in mortal combat against the relentless sizzle and decay of atoms. Thus, for me the figure comes to represent the inner struggle associated with this endeavor- an emblem of survival and triumph of personal identity against the over-whelming onslaught of an omnipotent, impersonal destiny. |
