Brothers In Arms © 2018 Vanessa Compton et George Middleton, 11” x 30” watercolor and paper collage on paper, diptych.
I grew up surrounded by nature in a creative family of painters, musicians, architects, and writers. My mother introduced me to watercolor, nature, and bird study, while my father’s interests in mathematics, music, and Eastern philosophy offered a very different perspective. From these influences I developed a love of both structure and freedom in painting: the pleasure of rendering reality convincingly, and the desire to move beyond it—to dance with paint and discover what lies underneath.
Largely self-taught, I immersed myself in museums, books, Surrealism, mysticism, the music and visionary art of the 1960s, and the work of painters such as Mati Klarwein. I became drawn to combining realistic and imagined landscapes with archetypal figures suggesting spiritual transformation.
